At The Enekwe Law Center LLC, we help clients across Maryland navigate the divorce process efficiently and with confidence. Divorce can be stressful, but our experienced attorneys guide you every step of the way, protecting your rights and ensuring fair resolution of your marital and financial matters.

We serve clients in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Howard County, Charles County, Anne Arundel County, and Baltimore County.

Divorce Overview

Divorce in Maryland may be absolute (ending the marriage entirely) or limited (legal separation). Our attorneys help you:

  • Determine which type of divorce applies to your situation
  • Identify grounds for divorce
  • Divide and protect marital assets
  • Address financial support if necessary

Types of Divorce

Absolute Divorce – Ends the marriage completely and resolves marital property division, financial support, and other marital matters. Spouses may also reinstate pre-marital names if desired.

Limited Divorce – Supervises separation without ending the marriage. Often called legal separation, it can address property division and financial responsibilities while the marriage remains legally intact.

Grounds for Divorce

No-Fault Grounds:

  • 12-month separation
  • Mutual consent

   Fault-Based Grounds

(may affect alimony and asset division):

  • Adultery
  • Desertion (actual or constructive)
  • Cruelty or excessively vicious conduct
  • Conviction of certain crimes
  • Permanent and incurable insanity

Our attorneys help you determine which grounds apply and guide you through the filing process.

Dividing Marital Property

 We assist in dividing:

  • Real estate, vehicles, and personal property acquired during the marriage
  • Bank accounts, investments, retirement plans, and other financial assets

Non-marital property, such as inheritances or gifts, is handled according to Maryland law. If spouses cannot agree, the court will determine a fair division.

Financial Support and Alimony

Alimony may be awarded to help a dependent spouse become self-supporting:

  • Pendente Lite: Temporary support during the divorce process
  • Rehabilitative Alimony: Short-term support to gain financial independence (2–7 years)
  • Indefinite Alimony: Rare; awarded due to age, illness, or disability

Alimony may be modified if circumstances change significantly.
